This Friday night, the charming gift and candle making shop Art Box will display new holiday goods and present its featured artist of the month, Mark Goodson, during Open Studio Night at The Monarch.
Art Box owners have a slew of new products they’re stoked about, including a line of socks that, they say, nobody can wait to get their hands on. Also on deck are some new body care products, jewelry, art prints, home decor, a few vintage and antique items, and new books– just to name a few.
Of course, with the holiday season approaching, many new holiday home decorations are popping up. Right now, Halloween is on the floor, with more coming in soon. This includes supplies for holiday-themed candle making for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“It’s a great opportunity to gather with friends and family by scheduling a candle making party,” said Deanna Schow, part owner. Candlemakers receive 10% off their base candle price for groups of six or more. “Our candle making has been quite busy as of late, so we encourage people to book their parties early.”
Their popular Recycle, Refill, Relight candle program is a nod to sustainability. You can buy an empty container, or bring one from home, and the Art Box will rewick and fill it with soy wax and your choice of fragrance for just $2 an ounce.
“With fall setting in, this is a great way to cozy up any home,” said Schow. We couldn’t agree more. Who can smell the pumpkin spice?
While you’re there to shop for new fall scents and more during First Friday Art Stroll and Open Studio Night, the Art Box is excited to feature Goodson.
The oil painter grew up in a small town surrounded by family. After attending school and serving as a missionary for two years, he fell in love, got married and started a family. He worked odd jobs until one became his career, a sign and graphic design company.
Goodson attributes his career change to a mid-life crisis. At 45, he sold his business and went back to college. Earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Weber State University required him to take two oil-painting classes, taught by The Monarch’s own Matthew Choberka.
Goodson was terrified at the prospect of oils and put it off till the very end, and even devised a plan to ask if he could do something else. However, he quickly discovered his talent for oil painting.
“As it turned out, I did not mix muddy colors, and I liked painting … a lot!” he said.
“After the second class, I was receiving commissions to do portraits of professors, and by the end of the third class, I’d done six 48-by-60 (inch) paintings of blue-collar workers as a cohesive body of work for my thesis exhibition,” Goodson said. He later painted the official portraits of two WSU presidents: F. Ann Millner and Charles A. Wight. These paintings hang in the Administration Building.
Goodson was accepted into The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ master’s program. He and his supportive family sold everything and moved to Philadelphia, and upon graduation returned to the quiet town of Huntsville, where Goodson established the Mark B. Goodson Studio/Gallery.
He has paintings in private, commercial and government collections in the U.S., Canada and abroad, and now paints full time and teaches an adult painting class each Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to noon. Interested parties can call 801-564-4585 or email [email protected].
